The Nexus Joy was operating beautifully. Captain Leif Gunnarsson sat in his bridge chair, a heaving monstrosity of leather and chrome, and watched the sunrise through the tinted bridge windows. The dull hum of machinery and the crackle of radio traffic were the only noises.

Gunnarsson was a morning person by nature and watching the sunrise while on board a ship was one of his favorite pastimes. While at sea, it was rare indeed that he would miss a sunrise, and could recall only a handful of times that he had.

“Mr. Jurgen. What is our ETA to Corpus Christi?”

“Captain, we should be in range of the pilot boat by 0500 tomorrow. The weather forecast is clear, and it’s a pretty straight shot up the coast from Costa Maya. I don’t anticipate any problems.”

“Very well. I’ll be taking breakfast in my stateroom. Inform me if anything comes up.”

“Yes, sir.”

Gunnarsson raised his bulk from the chair and left the bridge, heading one deck down to his stateroom where he dialed the stewards.
